Our Hounds for Heroes program provides a well-matched companion dog at no charge to retired/discharged veterans and school teachers in Bernalillo and Santa Fe counties in NM. Sponsorship and adoption prep time for each dog is provided by generous donors and NMPA volunteers as a small way to say Thank You to these heroes. (Once we have funds to hire a full-time staff member, we will expand the geographical reach of the program.)

The 1st step in the Hounds for Heroes matching process, is to complete our current Foster to Adopt application. Please do indicate somewhere on the form 'Hounds for Heroes'. One of our volunteers will then contact you to set up a home visit to begin next steps.

Our Hounds for Hereos program is not currently a service dog program although we are aware of the existing wait lists for many veterans and children who require a service dog. NMPA is seeking a Volunteer Hounds for Heroes Outreach Coordinator to help us begin to build the required resources to launch a service dog program for veterans and children in need to help shorten the wait list. If you may be interested in helping, please send an email to mail@newmexicopetsalive.org to express your interest.

If you may be interested in Sponsoring a companion dog for the Hounds for Heroes program, donations may be completed on the right-hand side of this page. There is comment area available to you in the online donation format to leave any specific info regarding your donation. As an example, it costs us an average of $250 to complete medical intake for a new rescue dog coming in to our program as 90% of the dogs entering our rescue program require vaccinations, heart worm testing and spay/neuter surgery and sometimes more. All donations in any amount are greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!
