NMPA JET: Job & Entrepreneurship Training

AIM HIGH!

Animals in need are connected to people in need. On average, approximately 50% (and sometimes much more) of a day's intake in animal intake facilities across New Mexico are brought there by their guardians who don't know what else to do but give them up. What many guardians do not know is that half of the animals (on average across the state) ending up in a NM animal intake facility today will not make it out alive. Some shelters and organizations claim to be 'no kill' but still put down treatable animals they do not know what to do with. A 90% live release rate out of a shelter/facility has never equated to true No Kill. 90% has always been an initial short term benchmark for a shelter/facility to achieve. The average live release rate across America for a true No Kill shelter/org (open admission and limited admission) is currently 97% - 99% of intake because less than 2% of animals entering shelters/facilities are truly vicious or irredeemably suffering and must be humanely euthanized.

Over the years we've seen an unfortunate common thread running through at least 50% of the requests for help we receive from individuals considering surrendering their companion animals to their local animal intake facility...they are all experiencing some type of economic hardship due to job loss or under-employment, lack of a living wage, divorce, unexpected medical situation or other family struggle.

With no other organization in New Mexico addressing the primary root of shelter surrender on a scale the people and pets of NM needed, we realized several years ago we were going to have to incorporate some unexpected new programming into our efforts: Job & Entrepreneurship Training. It isn't something any organization quickly adds to a companion animal lifesaving recipe so we took the time needed to research and to develop a program that would utilize some of our current programs along with additional professional skills within our talent pool of volunteers and supporters to meet the shelter surrender prevention needs of the largest number of people and pets in NM. The result is a suite of programs to train people to work at or own/operate one of several businesses. (If you have professional skills in another area and would like to suggest an addition of another NMPA JET program, please send an email to mail@newmexicopetsalive.org):
